7 ways I get out of a funk

Some days you get into a funk, everything is totally annoying, and it feels like nothing will help to shake it off.

My mother always told me “it's never too late to start your day over.” Here are some of my secret weapons for shaking off bad mojo.

1. Take a hike

Get up from your desk and whatever you are working on. Step away and unplug — collect your thoughts on a quick walk around the block. If as you come back around you’re still feeling funky, take another round. Stretching a bit, before and along the way, can help get you out of your head.

2. Get shut eye

Whether you’re four or 40, being overtired can put you in a funk. No time for a nap? Even 15 minutes of shut eye with an eye pillow can help you to channel calming vibes to take the funky edge off.

Try adding a couple drops of lavender essential oil to your eye pillow for an added boost of chill!

3. Shake it off

Move (it) around! If you’re at work, grab your headphones and head into the Ladies Room. Blast your favorite jam while you dance that funk away! It’s amazing what four minutes of Prince will do to change your mood. If you're at home, hop in the shower and belt out those tunes.

Try adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil to your shower.

4. Plant your funk away

Bring home the green – plants that is! Having plants in your home purifies the air and adds an overall sense of freshness. Studies from NASA show that keeping plants indoors improves the overall quality of life! So try ZZ plants, snake plants and aloe to bring good vibes into your home and life — those are some of our favorite easy-care plants. Also, gardening in general and getting your hands deep in potting soil is a great way to shake off any funk!

5. Try crystal magic

Amethyst, quartz and rose quartz are some of our faves for bring a little healing crystal energy into your life. Hold the crystal in your hands while reciting positive intentions to get your mojo up!

6. Forage your funk away

Head outdoors and forage wildflowers and twigs in your yard or while on a walk. Make a bouquet for your bedside table or for a loved-one. Or, try your hand at making a portrait out of leaves and flowers! It’s hard to stay in a funk when you realize that bougainvillea looks just like pouty lips with the perfect shade of lipstick.

7. Draw 30-second sketches

Bust out a pen, paper and a stop-watch (or stop-watch app as the case may be). Give yourself a topic that makes you happy — like kitties, plants or flowers. Do a series of 30-second sketches without allowing yourself to lift the pencil off of the paper. Don’t allow yourself to go over the 30 seconds. Keep on sketching! Continue for 10 minutes (or 20 sketches!) In the end you’ll notice that exercising your brain and hands while focusing on something that brings you joy will help you to get outta that funk!

I love these tips!

It’s true that foraging can absolutely get you out of your own head and into the earth, literally. I recently foraged in my moms unsprayed yard for violets and plantain. I dried them and made separate infusions I plan on using in salves. Speaking of salves, anyone reading this can make a Salve!  Any liquid carrier oil, &/or vegetable/fruit butter plus some beeswax = healing Salve!  Use an infused carrier (with healing herbs such as calendula or plantain) &/or some healing essential oils like lavender or Roman Chamomile and bam, there is an easy Salve to use on your family or share with friends. They make lovely gifts!
