Hand Cream with Lemon and Lavender Essential Oils

A gentle DIY hand cream recipe made with beeswax, sweet almond oil, lemon essential oil and lavender essential oil.

1 cup Aura Cacia Sweet Almond Skin Care Oil 4 fl. oz.
1 teaspoon Aura Cacia Lavender Essential Oil 0.5 fl. oz.
1 teaspoon Aura Cacia Lemon Essential Oil 0.5 fl. oz.
3/4 ounce beeswax
1/4 teaspoon sodium borate (Borax)
1 cup water
16-ounce resealable container

1. In a double boiler, combine beeswax and sweet almond oil. Heat just until melted.

2. Dissolve sodium borate (Borax) in water.

3. Add water mixture to blender, turn on and stream in the wax and oil mixture.

4. Continue blending until the cream begins to thicken and takes on a hazy appearance.

5. Add essential oils and resume whisking until cream is thick. Transfer to container.

6. To use, massage a small amount into hands.

Test on a small area before general use, and do not use on broken skin. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.

Thank you for this easy recipe. I’m wondering, what is the purpose of Borax? I love it in my laundry but didn’t realize it could be used on skin.
Thanks so much!

Thanks for your great question!  The creation of a DIY product like a hand crème/lotion can be a bit tricky when blending the oil and water components.  By adding Sodium Borate (Borax) into this recipe, it can help a bit with the overall longevity of the product in that it provides a bit of preservation and it helps during the process to keep the oil and liquid components from separating. The small amount of Borax can be omitted from the recipe, but the consistency of the hand cream might be affected.
