Sent a message to an old friend of mine last night before I went to bed and this morning when I woke up, he had responded.  I was pleasantly surprised.

This was a fun task. I am going to keep extra space in my journal to keep adding to my list of JOYS. I have always taken time each day to find joy and happiness but I have never kept notes about what those things are- it feels good to express my feelings.

This task is something I have grown to rely on over the years. I stop a few times during my day to acknowledge the healthy things I have going on. I check in to the joy; my health, my healthy children, my family, my mental health. This is essential as I pull myself out of poverty and move forward from divorce after 15 years together.

Every night before my husband and I go to sleep, we ask each other what the best part of our day was. I think it’s important to end the day focusing on something that brings you joy as opposed to dwelling on something negative that consumes you.

This is very helpful for me to write down the things that make me feel happy. Some of the things on my list are very simple - like watching the stars come out, watching clouds move over the moon, talking to my mom on the phone, and watching a sweet movie.

I find joy in the simplest things—a sunny day, my dog bringing me a toy, my granddaughters’ sweet faces, good books, and a glass of wine with friends.

Enjoying a beautiful day with a cup of coffee. Sent my husband off to work with a omelet.  Getting to do list ready, & check out some local flavor.

Hearing my child sing little songs. The very tall and old pine trees behind my home. Bright sunny days and good music are some of the things that bring me joy.

This is a very helpful task.  I think that we all overlook these little things that make us smile and bring joy.  I will try to do this everyday from now on and keep a journal.

This task was an easy one for me.  It’s almost embarrassing sometimes, as I feel others think I am childlike.  However, I choose to view the world thru the eye of a child.  Happy.  Everything amazing.

I always can go back to a wonderful memory of being at the beach with my sister and her children and me and mine when all the kids were little, that warm lovely time that still can give me a lump in my throat, because since then I have yearned and never experienced such feelings of contentment. I will definatly try the clarey sage and lemon oil to help bring me back again.

The other day, I was waiting for the bus and saw that it was going to be late.  I than sat down and decided to look around me and there was this beautiful large moth on the wall.  Had I not taken the time to just be, I might’ve missed it.  It looked like a grey treebark…so detailed and so delicate just being.

Now we’re on to something!  I can think of things that bring me joy all the time!  I have never lost my sense of wonder and awe that I had as a kid and I continue to nurture it so that I don’t ever lose it.  That is what keeps me feeling vibrant and alive more than anything else!

Joy, remember to focus on one moment that makes me feel good.  I realize my life is filled with those moments and it’s better to cherish them.

I have found the joy-in-the-moment is one of the most important life lessons we can practice every day. There is a wonderful cult movie, “The Crow,” where the main character states, “nothing is trivial.” And it’s true. Sometimes it is the smallest happiness that brings us the greatest joy.

Every day on my way to work I do what I call my Gratitudes. Sort of a prayer, sort of a meditation combined, and it starts my day off on a positive note. I ask myself what I’m grateful for today, and then I speak out loud and say things like ‘I’m grateful for the beautiful area I live in and all the things in bloom’ or obviously, ‘I’m grateful that my children are such good parents to their children’. It brings me joy every morning.

Macayla L

July 26, 2017 - 12:50am

Janet, this is a great way to start the day! I’m stealing your idea, i will find joy on my way to work. Especially since, who wants to go to work? Not me. Will put me in a positive mood. Thank you for sharing this.

Just a smile can help, but yes laughter is good medicine. :)
my list of “good” is very long. It has helped me, but thank you for the reminder to look back when I need a boost because I should frequent it more often.  I’ve been blessed in life when I look at the overall picture so far. I don’t have clary sage, but I sure had some orange on my bracelet today :)

Lately, it’s been hard to find joy…being Bi-Polar and life throwing me major curveballs (ie my daughter undiagnosed condition that has placed her in and out of the hospital), I am fighting and praying everyday….my definite joys are my daughters….they are my world….I will keep on fighting and praying everyday because I know everyday is a new day for joy…..

I need to remember all the great joys of my life!  I lost my son in April and I just cannot find the joy of life! I do have some great joys though!  I just have to let go of my unhappiness and remember the great joys of life!  The rest of my family, me, work my house oh just so much!

I am just in the last few weeks coming out of the fog, having experienced a several-months-long depression.  This is something I have dealt with at various times in my life, but in the last two years I’ve experienced bouts of pretty high anxiety in addition, and the combination really knocks me out.  I can’t say what it is that has brought me out of the depths of that, but I am finding joy in the ability to function - to cross things off my to-do list, to empty the dishwasher, to get out of bed in the morning.  Breathing deeply, considering the small beautiful things around me (my art, my plants, the view out my kitchen window), and moving through life with less difficulty are things I am not taking for granted.

My joy today was receiving a kiss from my 9 year old son. When he comes into my room in the morning he greets me with a kiss. That starts my day.  Its the sweetest gesture a boy can give his mom. I will always receive them . It lets me know he loves me.

I did take the time today to enjoy a walk outside just for the sake of watching the wind blow through the leaves and seeing what is in bloom. It was joyful and reminds me that I always find joy in nature. And I always find the smells of nature bring joy. I used a lavender essential oil for my fragrance to reinforce joy, and it was wonderful :)

Finding joy in the little things! Now that’s something I truly try to do every day but I tried a little harder today! Another great task that lifted my spirit!

Amber N

July 16, 2017 - 11:40am

I love this one today as I usually struggle when my kids are with my ex husband. It is a joy that they love him and that he and I can get along so well but watching them leave puts me in a negative space.
My dreams have come true with the man that found the 3 of us.. so if I can just continue to see the joy around me and love that surrounds my family and not think of the past, I will be unstoppable. Find the little moments! ❤

A joy for me is my cats :) I find joy in a purring cat curled up on my lap. Or watching the kittens and their antics as they chase bugs in the yard. They bring many moments of laughter and contentment to my life.
This was a good exercise in recognizing these things as joy - so many things become commonplace or pass us without notice. I’ll be more conscious of them now.

July 10, 2017 - 12:07pm

Today was a day of travel. Back to my hometown from house hunting in Austin. I was exhausted from connection flights and sitting all day that I could not wait to get home. I was in layover in Dallas for an hour which ended up turning into almost 3 hours due to weather. And then my boyfriend asked if I wanted some ice cream from Baskin Robbins. He had seen a bunch of people that had ice cream and thought that I might need some Perrin the small gesture touch my heart at the right time that I was so giddy like a little kid I completely forgot about being tired or having to wait longer to get home.

July 10, 2017 - 8:46am

I have slowed down and tried to enjoy little things. I love the animals and kids but I have been trying to make time to reflect each day. That is so helpful. This is really harder than I thought it would be completing these tasks each day.

We went camping this weekend and I was in awe of the beauty of nature and the fantastic weather we had. There were many set backs during the trip but nothing too great to dull the joy I received from the beauty that surrounded me.

Joy is a reminder to find happiness every day. This morning I had coffee on my patio and took care of my flowers. So peaceful! And simple.

To quote my favorite author, Ann VosKamp:  JOY is always possible, because there is always, always, always something to be grateful for.  Today I will practice the art of slowing down and noticing the joy I have in the little gifts from God - hot coffee, warm sunshine, soft blankets, quiet, peace in knowing my husband and son are soundly asleep in the next rooms as I read….

Remembering fond memories of my son and funny things he would say when he was younger, brings joy to my heart and smiles to my face! Also, walking around my flower and veggie garden- makes me mindful that we, with God’s help, make the world beautiful!

My joy was first thing this morning looking out my kitchen window to see a hollyhock in bloom - I haven’t planted any in a few years, but the seed for this one must have decided the time was right to make an appearance - hollyhocks bring back fond memories of my grandmother….felt joy in my heart…

Today, I found joy in an activity done by my daughter. She planted many beautiful floral plants in the front garden area so I’d see a beautiful garden when I returned home after three months in medical facilities.  Today, some of them were all profuse with blooms of many colors.  My joy was in seeing her effort to bring me joy!

as adults, my sister & brother were not always able to get together on holidays.  a couple years ago this changed, as we made an effort to get together on 4th of july.  we hung out in the pool, bbq’d and shared a few beers.  we laughed so hard and had so much fun!  all of our kids made fun of us for weeks because they said they never have seen us act like kids before.  this has been my favorite memory to date and look back on it often.

Even when I go through tough times, my desire is to be so in touch with my joy that I feel held by it. I want it to be my bedrock. The firm foundation on which i build my life. It’s definitely a journey, finding my bedrock of joy, but it’s a beautiful one. I use grapefruit oil in the shower every morning to try to greet the day with joy and things like making this list help me remember to slow down and notice all the opportunities I have all day to choose joy.

As I’m walking around the house reading this and multi-tasking, my youngest is trying to get his older siblings to play with him. It makes me so happy knowing they’ll always have each other to play with and learn from. It was a joyful little moment that made me “giggle.”

I find the most joy in simple pleasures. Cookin dinner with a glass of wine and relaxing music on a Friday night, the sight of flowers, the smell of fresh herbs, just being and looking at what surrounds me especially when I am in nature. I find joy when I don’t have to worry or stress about work and school and can completely give in to a moment.

This one was easy… I’ve been collecting these kinds of moments and putting them in a box since the start of the year. It’ll be nice to look back on all of the joyful moments of 2017 come December 31st! But I realized I don’t have to wait until the end of the year to reminisce the good times :)
